SEARCH ME, O GOD
4 verse hymn
(based on Psalm 139: 23-24)

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there be harmful ways in me.
then cleanse me, change me,
and lead me in Your way.

I need You Lord to set me free;
remove the chains, bring liberty.
Now purify where I burn with shame;
Please grant me mercy, bring honor Your Name.

Take all I am and make it Yours;
fill this weak heart with strength and pow'r.
Tame all my will, passion, self and pride.
I bow now, yielded, may You be glorified.

O Holy Ghost, Spirit of Truth;
Transform my life, my heart renew
One simple prayer, this I humbly plead
for more of Jesus and so much less of me.

One simple prayer, this I humbly plead
for more of Jesus and so much less of me.

for more of Jesus and so much less of me.

Written by Ralph Merrifield, Liz Van Heerden & "TW"

I wrote the 1st verse  in 1991, based on Psalm 139.
Sometime after this, Liz (from South Africa) sent me verses 2 & 3.
In August 2009, TW posted our verses on his web blog (slightly modified)
along with a 4th verse (see below).  With some additional modifications,
here is the result of our combined efforts...

"I can't get that song out of my head... got it playing continually right now...
I woke up with it on my mind. I would like to show it to the song leader at
church to see if we could sing it..."
(email from Patti)

Your music is awesome.   My name is Jane Chevalier.  I play and perform on hammer
dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, autoharp and folk harp.  I also teach all but the folk harp.

I donate my time teaching workshops at several music festivals around the Midwest.
This July I will be teaching at the largest hammer dulcimer festival in the world held
in Evart, Michigan.  This will be the fourth consecutive year I'll be teaching a
Hymn Duet Workshop along with two of my musical friends.

I have fallen in love with "Search Me O, God" and would like your written permission to
teach, perform and pass this wonderful hymn of praise along to others...  The workshop
handout will give credit to you as the composer but the arrangement will be my own.
Without your permission I will not, as a courtesy, teach your compositions.

(Jane,  from Michigan)

"The Lord directed me to this page today and what a blessing I've received.
I'm a pastor's wife and have many trials at present. My sister is seriously ill
and doctors offer little hope, my dad is unsaved and has cancer, and my
unsaved mother has been ill with pneumonia/congestive heart failure.
I have lupus so the needs are great and the stresses are high!

But, when I listened to "Center Of My Soul" and 'Search Me, O God',
it was as if God wrapped me up in a big blanket and sat me on his lap.
I've already phoned my husband who will be sharing this website with
our worship leader tonight!   I bless each of you for your faithfulness to
God's Word and sharing these songs with the body of Christ.
One day we can all sing them around the throne."

(Mary Ann, from Oklahoma)

NOTE:  A 4-verse version of "Search Me, O God" was first posted by TW at
http://timoteotrekker.wordpress.com/category/psalms-hymns-and-spiritual-songs/page/2/

On the web site, TW describes himself in the following way:

A native of Lancaster County/Chester County, Pennsylvania, I graduated from Philadelphia Biblical University in 2002, where I obtained B.S. degrees in both Bible and in Education. After completing college, I earned a living as a Bible teacher, a coach, and health and physical educator at Trinity Christian School of Fairfax.

Since 1996, I have spent many of summers as a counselor and a director at Camp Sankanac in PA. I see that both of these experiences have helped him to develop a heart for people and church ministry.

I began attending Capitol Hill Baptist Church in D.C. and soon became a member in 2003. After serving as an usher in the church, Mike, the possible pastor, approached me about the possibility of being a part of a church plant in Northern Virginia. Prayerfully considering this commitment, I decided to help Mike and the church in the revitalization process of Guilford in June of 2005.

I, TW (tee-dub), love “the opportunity to serve the pastoral team behind-the-scenes and to exercise my Spirit-given gifts for Christ’s passion.”

Recently, I worked for the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority as a park ranger.  And now, I am working as a police officer and and look forward to seeing where the Lord leads me next in this journey of life, in Christ!

In the time that I have free, I love to read theology, lead short-term missions trips, go backpacking and mountain biking in the foothills of West Virginia, and watch sports on the tube. I also enjoy playing all kinds of sports, particularly soccer and basketball. I am also an avid Philly sports’ team fan and enjoys watching and discussing theories about the TV show  "LOST".
